Have you heard about conky. It's tweakable and very lightweight, based
on torsmo. I think it was torsmos fork, alike project that wasn't
developed any more.

It's still on desktop, so no real alternative to display some info on
taskbar, but still it's quite minimalistic compared to gkrellm, I think.
