Thanks. That was the problem, I installed  xfonts-artwiz on Ubuntu 7.04.

I've tried installing from source http://artwizaleczapka.sourceforge.net/
but fc-cache doesn't see them as truetype:

/home/robertg/.fonts/artwiz-aleczapka-en-1.3: caching, 0 fonts, 0 dirs

The only thing I could find online was that someone used an older
set that worked. I think mine worked too a long time ago on Gentoo.
