i have no experience with [gkx]dm but i suggest you to kill it and try
to startx so you find out if your .Xdefaults is being read when using
gdm. also, i use a .xserverrc and i tell X which dpi to use directly
from there, just like this

remember you have to chmod +x ~/.xserverrc
this setting change some fonts but not _all_ of them, like in firefox
i got menu fonts changed but not page contents and some stuff like
that, but maybe it can help you.
