I used to use it for couple months some time ago, and still have it 
installed on my machine. Just ran it with

$ xcompmgr -r 8 -t -11 -l -11 -cC

to make sure that it is working. It works like a charm, here is the proof.

Nicely looking, and pretty stable too.

I am not using transparency, just shadows. And I like the way my desktop 
looks with shadows, but I stopped using it , because of couple annoyances.

(1) I am using conky (switched from root-tail) to display the logs in 
the root window. The shadows give some ugly artifacts on that text.

(2) when dragging the window from one desktop to another with xcompmgr 
"on", the desktop indicator on a fluxbox panel does not change until you 
drop the window. The same happens with current windows on the 
destination desktop, they are not refreshed until you drop the window. I 
found this pretty annoying since I'm using this functionality a lot.

But in overall xcompmgr does work for me  and I never had problem with 
it. If you want more details about my setup - don't hesitate.
