I've done exactly that in my nest of scripts for fluxbox:

You'll find there two menu'ing solutions both of which link off the
user menu rather than replacing the fluxbox menu. Also, with
marchmenu, I re-arranged it into a single script and removed the logic
for watching for changes in the installed applications as I have my
own, more generalised mechanism in 'watch-files'. You'll probably find
the gnome-menu to be more in line with what you see on gnome.

This is all scary homebrew stuff rather than finished, packaged
solutions - it's only tested in my own environments and you may need
to adjust them to suit. But it's all pretty simple python, bash and
perl.
