I use xmodmap a lot. And the win key is interpolated as Super on my system, as is the cmd key on a apple-style keyboard. The real problem is that I had written mod1 instead of mod4, and something else had grabbed Alt-e first. A case of me being selectively blind and other sets of eyes catching it.
