As opposed to other applications which are pixel-based. Example: Open a XTerm and type something like: $ man bash # or: vim largefile.txt Then try resizing that window in way that it displays only a portion of a character. You won't be able to do it, because XTerm can only display whole characters. This holds true for any instance of XTerm, no matter whether it's on IceWM, KDE, Gnome ...
