 I hesitate to step in here, because suggesting a different term is
wont to lead to flamewars that make vi/emacs seem like a minor
disagreement ;)  But, have you considered rxvt-unicode ?

 I can remember using konsole from kde3, but I gave that up when I
moved to using UTF-8 (the font handling in other kde3 progs,
particularly konqueror, was a pain : typically, set a font and then
change it until something worked for whatever language I happened to
be looking at).  So, my usage is probably very different from yours.
Also, a transparent background is anathema to me - my windows
overlap (my xorg screen is only 1600x1200), I'd never be able to read
the text if the background text showed through, so I haven't tested if
that part still works.

 I'm sure it is in gentoo, but you might also want to look at

for general information about it [ disclaimer - I updated that page,
so I'm not neutral about it, just responsible for all the errors :) ].

 Myself, I *only* use Xft fonts (e.g. ttf fonts - unlike the author/
maintainer of urxvt) and I've got it configured in .Xresources with -

! settings for urxvt
URxvt.background: Black
URxvt.foreground: White
URxvt.geometry: 100x40
URxvt.faceSize: 12
URxvt.font:     xft:DejaVu Sans Mono:autohint=true, \
                xft:FreeMono:autohint=true
! I'm really using urxvt, so force it in the title
URxvt.title:    urxvt
! tone down bright blue by mixing some green into it
URxvt.color12: #0080FF

 These are probably not the settings you want (well, the background
certainly isn't), but it's very configurable and a simple build with
only gdk-pixbuf or libafterimage needed in addition to normal deps.

 I'm tempted to say that almost everyone uses gdk-pixbuf these days,
but since you're using such an old kde that might not be true for you -
probably, even older versions of gtk+-2 will fulfil that dependency.
