No problem, as long as it's ok if I defend my choice :-) I have,
actually, tried it (and @Duke - also pretty sure I've tried eterm as
well). Neither of them "worked" for me.  I can remember rxvt better as
it was more recent. It was ok... I could live with it in a pinch, but
just not... quite... there... IIRC, it wasn't as keyboardable as
Konsole... e.g. in the latter I can rotate through tabs with <shift-
left/rightarrow>, which is extremely natural and convenient. I seem to
recall that I had to use the pgup/pgdn keys in rxvt. Yealch. Bad enough
I have to do that in Firefox :-(

And I like my tabs at the top, which I don't think rxvt allows... and I
can move a tab's position with <ctrl-shift-arrow> in Konsole, which I
don't think was possible at all.  And I don't think it allowed my
transparency eye-candy. IIRC, eterm was even less functional than this
(looking at the screenshots on its site, it doesn't even seem to have
tabs, which is a dealbreaker for me).

So, bottom line.... my terminal is Konsole. Sorry if I'm unfairly remem-
bering my experience with rxvt wrongly... but I do remember clearly that
I liked it less than Konsole :-)

You won't find me defending konq... and truthfully I *have* had some
trouble with UTF-8 (non-ASCII) chars in Konsole, but it has never been
something I really need, so it's a non-issue.  Except that I'm lately
doing some text work in vim with Japanese, and for that purpose I have a
Konsole that gets called with LC_CTYPE="ja_JP.UTF8", and it works fine
for me.  Go figure.

*Only*?  I regularly work, lately, in 1024x768 :-) (not out of choice or
preference, I can assure you...)

It seems you haven't use transparency much at all :-D ... in my
experience, transparent windows in Xorg (at least - can't speak for MS
Win) never show "underlapped" windows... the background that shows
through is always just the root window image, no matter what's
underneath.... for exactly the reason you say -- it'd be useless
otherwise (or, could this be a feature of KDE rather than Xorg? Hard to
imagine). If you choose your root image well and set transparency to a
dark enough level, it's quite nice :-)

Hmmm... this is potentially of interest to me. Are you saying that
rxvt allows *proportionally spaced* fonts?  Or am I inappropriately
conflating TTF as a technology with the orthogonal property of font
spacing-ness?

I'm not sure, but... I wouldn't expect KDE to use gtk-anything... no?
