Window managers don't do anything which could affect xgamma(1).

Do you use a compositing manager, too?  What GPU do you use?
Does xrandr(1)'s gamma adjust do anything different?

I understand that nvidia's binary driver is coded to accept the gamma
changes issued by ht RANDR extension without actually changing the gamma
ramps on the GPU.

Or, a compositing manager (or some Gnome or KDE daemon, if applicable)
might override the changes as soon as you make them.
