You should really look up the XDG and setup in the app that does that. It 
is easily possible, MATE redefines them, but you should check

Use:
xdg-mime query default x-scheme-handler/mailto

The problem is, the browser is used as "fallback" for everything in 
XDG.. I fight with it all over again too.
