    Well fixed again!!! I wrestled with this problem when I was running 
32 bit Debian.

     There are at least 2 mimeapps.list...the one in ~/.config wasn't 
being updated...so I had to change
it manually to thunderbird.desktop. A second problem is that thunderbird 
apparently does not
put a thunderbird.desktop in /usr/share/applications one of the 
directories the xdg stuff searches.
And google-chrome also does not make it easy to figure out what it calls 
when a mailto link is clicked.
