I've just tried the patch, but the symptoms are unchanged.

The only difference I'm noticing between patched and unpatched
Ratpoison-1.4.8 is in the font they pick for messages, but that's
probably due to the unpatched version (from Pkgsrc) not being linked
to libfontconfig. I'm really only mentioning this as proof that I've
actually run 2 distinct installed versions :)
