I continue to have this problem and will be grateful for any help.

I used the current_prolog_flag/2 predicate to verify that prolog 
indeed has /pl as the value for "home".  I then tried setting home 
and SWIPL to \pl and \\pl but I continued to get the error.  I have 
also tried various combinations of single quotes and double quotes, 
with ".pl" and without it.
