Try to keep the posting in context. There have *always* been offers of
US$50k for senior and lead developers in NYC. As a long-time consultant who
often considered making the jump to full-time, I've seen lowball offers
since at least 1992, when I first entered the field.

With eight years as a professional developer, I'm close to two years without
a contract now and have considered positions that paid as little as US$50k.
But, that was only at smaller start ups and less established companies.

The fact is that I would rather work as a US$17/hr temp than as a US$50k
lead developer at an established company. The experience of friends who
*have* taken such lowball offers indicates that the latter is guaranteed to
be a miserable experience. Big shops that lowball like that invariably want
to do things wrong from beginning to end. They're giving a clear indication
that they don't understand or have completely deprioritized the creation of
software.

Well, as an MCSD I have found it helps with the interview process and that
is it. I have decided not to 're-up' my cert for .Net as I just don't see it
as being worth it (too much cost for too little benefit), especially with a
senior .Net lead developer in NYC only being offered $50,000.
