Look, I'm no expert, but it seems to me that I should be able to reply to another email and start a new thread. If the standard doesn't allow for that, it's broken. The sending email client could just drop the message ID when you change the subject, or the receiving client could use a combination of message IDs and subject lines to handle threads. I guess I can't relate--Gmail handles threads beautifully.
