The standard isn't the issue. The standard is fine. It's the mail client
software that's broken.

If MUA software stripped the In-Reply-To header when you changed the
subject, it would be impossible to change the subject _without_
creating a new thread, but doing that _is_ legitimate.

Not if it caters to this practice.


I cannot really condone the mindless use of email that is so prevalent.
Thread Hijacking (the practice you suggested) is just one aspect of
this mental sloth.
