I got it to work by editing nunit-console.exe.config line 1:
-<?xml version="1.0" encoding="Windows-1252"?>
+<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

That worked for the gui as well as the console runner.

For gnunit, I haven't been able to get that to run again after
installing nunit 2.4.7. Even removing nunit 2.4.7, the version I got
from aptitude, and gnunit/gnunit2 that I got from aptitude, and
reinstalling it all from aptitude, I can't run it again.

I'm not opposed to helping, but I saw the source for gnunit, and it
gave me the screaming heebie-jeebies.
