 Thanks again.  In answer to your questions:
  
 1) I back up my .eco file to an external hard drive regularly and have Ecco set so that it automatically makes two backups (.bk1 and .bk2).  However, it seems that the .bk1 and 2 files are automatically overwritten so I don't think I have one from the time when Ecco was working normally.  I suspect the same thing happens with my external hard drive.  I have a different, very small .eco file which seems to be working normally still on my laptop.  I believe my husband has a copy of my .eco file on his computer but he is away at present.  I don’t know if mentioning those two is relevant or not.  
  
 2) When I go to File > Properties, under 'Connected to Master file' it says N/A.  I used to sync it with a Palm Pilot I had years ago but haven't synced at all in recent years. 
  
 3) I suppose I expressed myself wrongly.  As advised, I downloaded the EccoPro extension v4.6.7.5by slangmgh and am running that now. I went to File > Database > Compact and it was then that it said I'd recovered over 3MB of data.  File > Database > Recover told me it was unable to recover data from the file.  
  
 I'm probably not giving you the information you need to help me – my apologies.  If that's the case I'll ask a computer expert about all the background stuff and send what you need but this person won't be familiar with Ecco.  I think I must be the only person in the UK who uses it!
