Thanks for your replies -- this post deals just with the first query 
about Birthdays.

The first image below is an example from my PhoneBook.  The subitems 
that have a date in the Birthday column used to show up in my Calendar 
view, as is the case for Arch GRAHAM's birthday (actually his death 
anniversary) -- see the second image.  But the PhoneBook subitem for 
Colin GRACE does not appear in the Calendar view (I've not bothered to 
provide an image for that page), and I've not been able to figure out 
why and, more importantly, how to get it into the Calendar view.

r634718 -- hope this is clearer.  Any ideas?

Friedhelm -- when I click on the Birthday date for Colin GRACE, I set 
the recurring date and Tickler view (I don't use Alarms in this context) 
but still get nothing in the Calendar view.

The annoying thing is that this worked when I first set it up years ago 
... so why not now?
