Pete ...

Good to see that you are still out there. I hope everything is
fine on your end.

I had contact with Zvi last year. You are right taking Ecco of the
Market was not part of a deal or requested by MS, it was more or
less pudding on the cake, a gentleman's agreement when at the same
time NetManage sold patents to the TCP/IP stack code they owned to
MS.

Here is what Facebook friend Zvi wrote me http://eccopro.com/netmanage/

Be blessed,

Friedhelm

I can add a bit more. I don't
know if it will improve anyone's perspective of Zvi
but I can certainly understand at least the basis of
his decision.

I spent some significant
energy working on getting the code released, etc. As
part of that I was given some insight into the
underlying ethos and perspectives of the players.

AFAIK, Zvi removed Ecco from
the market not because of any contractual requirement
at all... it was very personal and more of a sense of
embarassment (not sure that's the right word -- maybe
sad resignment?) that he felt he had no ability to
compete against Outlook. And rather than try-and-fail
he sensed the right thing to do was to pull the
product and focus his energy elsewhere.

That's why there really WAS
willingness to allow an open source release, combined
with a sense that they could not afford to invest
significant resources in doing so... which ultimately
became the death knell. Extracting the licensed NDA
(Non-Disclosure) code was estimated to be a costly
problem (and IIRC Borland was not an issue but rather
some even more obscure code from other vendors --
maybe Timex and/or Palm? -- that had managed to get
sprinkled throughout.)

I'm very sad that it didn't
work out. If I hadn't already moved away to Colorado,
I still believe I might have been able (as a trusted,
NDA-signing, volunteer) to extract the "bad" code so
it could be released. But that was not to be.

All water under the bridge at
this point.

Blessings,

Pete
