The TCP/IP stack / Winsock wars of
the 90's were over in August of 1997 (EccoPro development stop)
with the release of Winsock version 2.2.2

The History of Winsock a well written page at: http://tangentsoft.net/wskfaq/articles/history.html

Thanks for those details Pete... and great to see you
here!

I've always been under the understanding that Zvi pulled
Ecco because of competition from Outlook, but never knew
whether it was part of an deal with MS or some other
reason. You've now clarified that it wasn't about a deal
but rather a "personal" decision made by Zvi.

One thing I never knew and always wondered about is how
important Ecco profits were to NM at the time. I can
assume that they were not all that important, else Zvi
wouldn't have just given up that easily... but I used to
wonder about that. At the time it was pulled, I think
Ecco was just hitting its stride... which is one reason it
was such a shock.

My only lament about the way the open source thing was
handled was that it wasn't figured out earlier in the
process that it would cost too much to make it happen...
we got strung along for a long time and then literally --
as I remember -- waited until the day of the scheduled
release only to be let down. I can understand that it
took time to analyze the situation, but it probably would
have been better not to promise a release until that
analysis was already done. It was a painful
disappointment to the Ecco community at the time... some
of whom, by the way were NM customers for other NM
products.

Thanks again for the great insight! You filled in some
great blanks!
