May I jump in here on your idea Freidhelm ...
Lindsay will be working with a backup file so it is worth a shot to make a copy of the copy and do a Recover after the Date deletion routines. And I mean doing Recover several times if not every time during the deletion process. Why? My oldest file had issues and as I worked through it - I was changing text folders to ExtText folders to regain "1-misc" or "Pointers" (one of 3 essential 64KB memory registers that get full), it seems the file reorganized itself a couple times w/ Recover as I changed stuff around inside. I say this b/c I also kept an eye on "4-Item" or "Items" and "2-vou" or "View Lines" and regained a bunch of those several times while doing Recover. Again, I cannot swear by this, but Recover seems to (sometimes) release more three key resources whereas Compact releases Memory Fragments, which will give back disc space, but disc space these days is not the issue - it's those three 64KB memory registers that get full.

Note: the "1-misc", "2-vou", "4-Item" etc. is EE's "Tray->right click->show Memory Info" lingo and the "Pointers", "View Lines" and "Items" are eccoMagic's Memory Reporters lingo. EM's Reporter is the easier to read for me and also gives a countdown "Free" value which is nice.

What are the 1, 2 and 4 numbers again ?
