Re: Backup and Recovery

Thanks for your replies, people.  My intention was to keep this simple 
knowledge-seeking thread separate from the existing thread about my 
calendar problem.  So, for the record here, I'll summarise answers to my 
questions in the email 27/11/15 (below) and add my comments.  I'll 
respond to the 'problem' suggestions/questions in the other thread in a 
day or 2 (not much time at present).

1.  Native Ecco has a maximum of 8 (seems an odd number, but there we 
are <g>), but see 3. below.

2.  Prior to further testing of Recover, I ran File > Database > Test on 
several .eco files and every one resulted in "No errors".  On the same 
files, I then ran Recover (each time with EE running) with the following 
results:

                    2.1  on my current file (which, as discussed
                    elsewhere, does have some sort of problem): same as
                    before "Ecco was unable to recover data from the
                    file" -- comments from others say this message
                    probably confirms there's a problem;
                    2.2  on several old files that may well have had
                    issues: "Your Ecco file was damaged.  Recoverable
                    data is in this new file ...";
                    2.3  on other old files that should have been OK:
                    "Contents successfully recovered. ..." -- as expected;
                    2.4  on standard files provided with Ecco where I've
                    never made any changes: "Contents successfully
                    recovered. ..." -- no surprises there;
                    2.5  when Recover is run and a new file is created,
                    that new file seems to lose some of the Ecco
                    structure (eg, columns) but I've not looked at that
                    in any detail -- also, I presume the existing file
                    is not changed in any way.


3.  You can tell I'm not a serious EE user -- I did not know about the R 
click tray icon -- lots of options there for me to study. But I'd like 
an answer to Mark's question "how does this setting interact with Ecco's 
native backup choices?"  And, r634718 said "EE has a superb daily backup 
feature that can make backup[s] ... and save them for a user-selected 
number of days".  But the EE backup option seems identical with the 
basic Ecco backup routine. What makes it superb and where does one 
choose the number of days as distinct from the number of backups?

Explanation of these aspects of Ecco would be good to include in the 
proposed EccoWiki -- I'm happy to write something up so long as there 
are some good fact checkers out there.

And, just so everyone knows, I have rigorous backup routines, so I 
always have backups available if something goes wrong.
