Let me correct some of the remarks
below. We have to applaud NetManage for converting EccoPro to
32-bit coding early 1997 with the release of "update32.exe".
Otherwise we would be stuck with today's operating systems which
do not accept 16-bit coding. What they did not do then was to
convert the Installer portion of the code, proof is they were
unable to adjust the Copyright Notice as originally requested by
me (see my exchange with them of April 2004 at http://www.compusol.org/ecco/netmanage.html ).
Also, they did not convert the original coding of the Palm Pilot
conduit files, ecaddc1.dll, ecdatc1.dll, ecmemc1.dll and
ectodc1.dll which still required the "old" windows/system folder
(not system32).

of the most infamous years in Ecco history. That was the
year that PC Magazine -- the then publication of record
for personal computing -- rated Ecco Pro the best PIM on
the market and gave it their "Editors Choice." I remember
the day I read that article and thought ... it's about
time!
It was also the year that NetManage discontinued
development of Ecco forever...much to the shock of many

Mark mentioned the 16 bit code in Ecco and it reminded me
that I always lamented that Ecco development couldn't have
held out for maybe just one more year. Had it done so, I
think there's a good chance it would have become a fully
32 bit program and its Achilles heel might have been a
footnote in its history rather than a headline that still
follows it around. It was right around those years that
most developers were working to convert their code to 32
bit but many -- like Ecco -- had not yet made the full
transition.
Most people feel bad about too many bills to pay, global
warming, or the fact that you still can't get a really
good pizza outside of New York City. But if you are
really weird like me, I still can't get past the bad
fortune of the timing of Ecco's development demise and its
being frozen forever in the 16 bit world.
On a personal note... much of my Ecco time at the moment
is being selfishly spent on my own file problems. My most
critical file has a nasty corruption problem that I've
been working hours on over the past two days trying to
fix. I have it up on my screen now and I'm taking a break
from the work to write this. At the moment things seem to
be going well. But sometimes that comes to a crashing
halt in a hurry. So back to work I go! Forgive my
ramblings... my head is spinning with this issue. But
strangely... it's also fun!
Something tells me this is the only forum in the world
where people understand what I mean... Long live Ecco!
