Good points Friedhelm.  Perhaps the summary statement can go something like this? ...

 The orphaned software package contains non-compatible 16 bit code, but workarounds have been developed by a league of enthusiasts, keeping Ecco modern despite its creaky code base. 

By way off cleaver add-ons and extensions, memory and display issues have been eradicated, synchronizing and  data transfer has been updated, and HTML & RTF incorporated.  
The orphan Ecco lives!
