I think I see what happened. Your data file is primary.eco and you renamed it "xprimary.eco". When ecco starts it tries to open the last file used, and since it could not be found, it tried to create a new file using the default.ext template file.
I think if you rename the file back to primary.eco then double-click on it, ecco may start and open your file.
Regarding the license. Ecco was put into the public domain, but the original installer no longer worked. So several people created their own installer, including Compusol. Compusol decided to charge for this service. I believe in this group (or the parallel one, ecco_pro) are other free installers. No licensing is required.
The fact is, all these installers need to do is copy the entire contents of the ecco files plus the .dll files, .cfx, .alm, and .fsb files, formerly in windows and system32 to your chosen install directory.
So, if you do not have success opening the correctly renamed file, that you double-clicked on, then send me an email address or shared dropbox address and I can zip up my c:\ecco directory and send it to you. Then you can just copy your primary.eco file into the folder you unzipped to, and we can see how that goes.
