Rick, have you seen Pierre's project InfoQube?  You may want to take a look.  I'd say it is probably as close as you can get to a replacement for Ecco with a more modern engine under the hood that is available at this time.  It is quite different from Ecco, but has some of the same capabilities and several advantages including the ability to handle a lot more data.
