Sorry to take this out on you guys but I just had to vent. :(

Just spent an hour+ transcribing something, saved it, then tried the

CTRL-SHIFT-J, Win-Ctrl-Shft-V trick.

It didn't work. I closed Ecco and opened the file again.

Neither it nor the backup had my transcription.

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Using the technique Pastor Don gave CTRL-SHIFT-J you can combine multiple items into one item. And each item that you combine this way should reduce the item count by 1.

So suppose you had the following:

Item1

subitem1

subitem2

subitem3

You now decided that to reduce your item count, you would combine the three subitems into one item. (this is something I do often, by the way to keep the item count down.)

So you end up with:

Item1

subitem1

And you have reduced the item count by 2.

To do it, you have to left margin select subitem1, subitem2 and subitem3 and then invoke CTRL-SHIFT-J

subitem1 will then contain the concatenated text of subitem1, subitem2 and subitem3.

Now...

You may well have to reformat the text in subitem1 since the concatenated text won't have any breaks in it and may well be difficult to interpret as you mentioned.

You can do that in various ways including putting line breaks in the places you want using SHIFT-ENTER. That way you can separate subitem2 and subitem3 with a line break if you like so they again are represented as separate subtopics to the parent item.

One major disadvantage of this is that you will not be able to assign separate values to each subitem as you could before you joined them and all assignments for subitem2 and 3 will be lost. The formerly separate subitems will now all have to have the same folder assignments as a group.

I hope I have not missed your point and that this is helpful.

I should also mention that the size of the file has no particular relevance except that it can sometimes mean there is a problem with it. It does not necessarily pose any problem if the file very large as long as it is otherwise healthy and as long as it doesn't have to be smaller for reasons unrelated to Ecco. It's the pointers that pose the main limitation, not the size of the file.
