 I only saw your first reply just now,
 Anyway, I downloaded your examples but both players refuse to play MP3 with ID3 tag
 The $$retcode is 10 in your MCI Audio Player and  showing error 'problem initialising MCI'.
 One other strange thing is that the MP3 plays fine on WMP classic/FFDShow.
 I always thought that WMP Classic also uses MCI, but I may be wrong.
 It does use FFDShow which rules out FFDShow as cause of the problem.
 

 For now I will continue to remove ID3 tags whenever I get the error from MCI
