I believe the locks are too transient to catch that way. I attempt to delete the folder - I get an error message. Just repeat the delete and it gets farther. The idea that it might be something triggered by the delete - the cloud backup program - which releases it very quickly is believable. Why not use process explorer to figure out which application has locked the handle? It may be that, because it certainly wants to know when files are deleted. I'll experiment. If I delete a large folder - nothing complex, highlight, hit shift+delete, say Yes - I will often repeatedly hit the message... "Cannot remove folder [insert random folder here]: It is being used by another person or program." It's not true. If I repeat the delete request it proceeds farther, usually hits the same message repeatedly. Eventually all the files/folders go. I get the same problem with automated processes like MSBuild deleting a whole folder structure before trying a build. Any ideas on how to fix it? It's becoming really annoying. It didn't use to happen so I wonder if some Windows Update fix (I drink *all* the Kool-Aid) has foisted buggy code on me. Environment - WinXP + SP3 - I take every patch from Windows update.
