Create a virtual machine and install in that.  It's way easier.

The XP/Vista distinction is meaningless as Ubuntu is a replacement for
both operating systems. (Perhaps you were thinking of using Wubi, in
which case I believe it would work fine with either XP or Vista, but I
have not used it.)

Ubuntu installs wonderfully on both desktops and laptops, but of
course it is possible that you might run into some hardware
compatibility issues with either form factor (depending on what
hardware is inside them, of course).

Surely you have a linux enthusiast in your office...? Buy him lunch
and ask him to help you, would be my advice. Then you won't be
struggling through something that would be dead simple to someone with
a bit of linux experience.
