In theme.rc:

  SettingsFile "$ConfigDir$volatile.rc"

In alias.rc:

  *alias !reloadTEM !NetReloadModule $texteditModule$
  *alias !unloadTEM !NetUnloadModule $texteditModule$
  *alias !saveSetting !execute [!setEvar %1
%2][!reloadTEM][!xtextSaveEvar @$settingsFile$@ @%1@ @%2@][!unloadTEM]

So you just need to look for the !savesetting bang or $settingsfile$ to
see when volatile.rc is used. Agent Ransack is great for that, or you
could try xcal's LSTweaker. Or you could do something like this (sorry
if this is ugly, sometimes wrapping sucks ;) ) if you're running an
alternate OS but have your XP partition mounted:

brian@brian-laptop:/media/hda2/Shells/LiteStep/profiles/Brian/themes/ProjectXPC/Config$
