Windows update, problems with Litestep?

Since I installed Litestep on my laptop a few weeks back, I've every
so often found the fan spinning up and slowing down, again and again.
Quite regularly. I poked around and discovered that every 13 or 14
seconds there's a flurry of activity from a bunch of services, and
sometimes during this I'll very briefly see a (second) wuauclt.exe
process start and immediately stop. Since this has only been happening
since I switched to Litestep, I tried going back to Explorer to see
what happens. In Explorer, the wuauclt.exe process appears to start
and stay running, and a little yellow shield appears in the system
tray to notify me of updates. (I've got Automatic Updates set to
download automatically and then ask me to install.) The shield wasn't
appearing in Litestep, and it *seems* that it was the source of my
trouble. Windows update was trying, every 13 seconds, to show that
little shield, but something about the difference between Litestep and
Explorer was stopping it, and somehow this was a sufficiently
demanding operation that it caused the fan to spin up again, only to
spin down 10 seconds later.
So, has anybody else found this to happen? Does anybody know how to
make Litestep and Automatic Updates play together nicely? Does
Automatic Updates succeed in putting that little yellow shield icon up
in Litestep for anybody else?
