These are all excellent explanations guys. I think Jochen did the 
perfect example, Antoine did the great explantation and cerbie summed it 
all up in a nutshell.

I can definitely see both sides of threaded usage. I don't really see 
the benefit though. I guess a module like xprop would fit the bill, but 
I I doubt it would make a difference in system perfomance for most of us.
