I think that has more to do with the ease-of-use of the current distros versus how much work it took to just install the thing 10 years ago. I started using LiteStep because I was tired of the way things looked in Windows. I had already tried and failed to install several Linux distros, so I found it when looking for ways to radically change the way my desktop worked.
