Windows 2000 Updates

Hi,

I took the liberty to update the Windows 2000 SP4 update scripts and also split them up into smaller batch files like it was done for Windows XP some time ago.

Attached you'll find win2ksp4.zip which contains all the files I created/modified. They are not perfect yet and there are still some things that should be ironed out before a release but I'm a little short on time atm and can't continue working on them for the next week so I'm submitting what I have until now.

The installation process was changed a little to the old behavior.
This is how it works now:

1. If SP4 isn't installed, install SP4.
2. Get rid of the "Welcome Screen" (this thing has been bugging me for ages and always prevented me from seeing whats going on in the command prompt so I added a registry patch to kill it).
3. Install "Root Certificates Update". (SEE NOTE #1)
4. Install IE6 SP1 + Updates.
5. Install Windows Updates from September 2004 until Februar 2010.
6. Install MDAC 2.8 + Updates. (This is optional. Remove "win2ksp4-mdac.bat" from your scripts directory and these updates won't be installed.)
7. Install .NET 1.1 + Updates. (This is optional. Remove "win2ksp4-dotnet11.bat" from your scripts directory and these updates won't be installed.)
8. Install .NET 2.0 + Updates. (This is optional. Remove "win2ksp4-dotnet20.bat" from your scripts directory and these updates won't be installed.)
9. Install DirectX9 + Updates. (This is optional. Remove "win2ksp4-directx9.bat" from your scripts directory and these updates won't be installed.)
10. Install Media Player 9 + Updates. (This is optional. Remove "win2ksp4-mediaplayer9.bat" from your scripts directory and these updates won't be installed.)

After that the installation is done. Took almost exactly 3 hours with both server and client running in VMWare so this isn't really a realistic measurement.

Note #1: The "Root Certificates Update" that is being installed is still the same as in the old script. I wasn't able to find an official download link for the latest one for Windows 2000. The one being installed should be v3 while the latest for Windows 2000 should be v9.

Note #2: As already written, installation of updates for MDAC, .NET 1.1, .NET 2.0, DirectX9 and Media Player 9 are optional but still included in the main update script. If you don't want to install those updates, just remove the batch files from your scripts directory and they won't be used.

Note #3: The updates I included are almost all exclusively based on what Windows Update told me to install. Only the MDAC updates are taken from the old script. So it is very well possible that I "forgot" to include some important update that really should be installed. Someone else will have to check this.

Note #4: There currently are a total of 4 Updates Windows Update is still offering me for installation. This is 1. the Root Certificates Update, 2. the Malicious Software Removal Tool from February 2010 (I think these things are pretty useless) and then there are 3. KB955069 and 4. KB941569 which are being installed during the Setup but for some reason fail to register or whatever. I don't know. They are both included in the script, both get installed but they still turn up on Windows Update. Someone else will have to investigate this further.

Note #5: ie6.bat was renamed to ie6sp1.bat.

Note #6: I changed the download paths for some updates to make it more clear which updates belong to which package/program. If I have some more time in a week or so I'd like to go over these again, fix up some more of them and then also make the same changes to the Windows XP update scripts.

That's basically it ... So, if anyone has the time to check and test these script, please do so and report back.
I strongly suggest that these scripts should not be included in the main trunk of the repository yet as they are still a work in progress. I'm just submitting them to the list so that other people can have a look and comment on them. As already said, I'll most likely continue with my efforts in a weeks time.
