That's precisely what Asynchronous Pluggable Protocols (APPs) are for:

I'm not talking about my Passthrough APP (which solves a somewhat 
different problem) - just a regular plain vanilla APP, done by the book.

With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine. However, this is not
