In these days of multi-core processors, that would definitely be the way
to go, and is the basis of our current design philosophy in this sort of
application. In this case, though I feel as though I've just asked
direction to the local town, and been told "Ah well, if I were you, I
wouldn't start from here". In this case 'here' represents an application
some 15 years old. It started life as native 16bit Windows, became MFC,
then WTL and is now build under VS2008 and WTL 8.1. You might call it
legacy code, perhaps heritage might be a better term. We could bring it
up to date, but we already have a 3rd generation of the product, as a
main stream version. The problem is that we have a significant body of
clients who still use the 1st generation product, and who need to be
supported for unrelated political reasons (many of them still use Office 
97).

If we could ditch the generation 1, we would, but some of use have to
live with systems that are forced to be 'out of date' by marketing
expedience.

Apart from the rather special circumstances, noted above, I would agree
with you almost entirely.
