sleep(1); is enough and even usleep(1000); but it makes a huge
USABILITY difference - while all the printfs were merely disturbing,
I now experience real lag even when just starting up an xterm.

Still 115.200 fps, as in XF86 4.4 (in 4.3, I had roughly 70),
I don't complain.
