you can use the radeon driver for X, the ati driver loads it

i'm not using a radeon 8500, but a 9000 that share a lot of
caracteristics.

I was experiencing the same problem, there was a bug in the radeonfb
kernel driver, and using 2.4.20-rc3-ben0 corrected the problem.
you can use the last benh kernel tree that correct the problem.
