Remember that XFree86 isn't just for Linux, and desktop domination isn't 
really the business of XFree86: it's more to do with the Linux distributors.

That's never going to happen. An awful lot of people rely on using the 
client-server architecture, especially in the business world. Besides, as has 
been pointed out many a time on this list, the networking aspect is not used 
on localhost, so it doesn't really matter.

And you've tried XDirectFB, right? :)

Don't know about that, but one very promising idea that has been mentioned 
already is that DRI driver structure be merged into Mesa. Thus, XFree86 can 
use Mesa, but so can DirectFB and so on. I really hope this will be the case.

Not sure what to say here. Have you tried programming with the Win32 API? 
Besides, Microsoft are phasing it out in favour of a more .NET approach. 
Also, Microsoft really don't like Wine. I don't think they'd allow XFree86 to 
use it.
