I think the "openness" issue is clouding some judgements.

Webcasting future conference calls would:

a) Allow a larger audience to monitor the progress.
b) Eliminate the "private" nature as a point of argument.
c) Enable 3rd party verification of the transcripts.

The webcasting component can be limited to listen-only so as not to distract
the invited participants.  Perhaps some feedback mechanism, IRC and/or
mailling list can be incorporated.

As to the comment that "streaming is not possible", well, thanks mostly to
Regulation FD, virtually all major publically traded companies in the US
simultaneously webcast their quarterly conference calls.
