Since your objection to "my group" (whatever that is) seems to be
something Keith did as an individual on a private mailing list, or
didn't do at a conference in New York, and I don't even know what that
was, how am I supposed to answer that?

My agenda is not to show that one group is "right" - it doesn't
interest me that much, and I don't have the data. I'm in the "let's
get this fixed" faction.

What I want to know is, what are we going to do now? What are the
possible paths to unifying X again?

If we don't discuss the issues and try to resolve them, then the only
path I see is "battle to the death" - one of the X projects will win.
Is that your proposal?

The current proposal is that we spend one hour to at least attempt to
understand the problem fully over a high-bandwidth voice channel.
That seems like a good idea to me, but sure there are other workable
approaches.
