And both differ from SGI's method, and (if I understand it correctly)
Sun's.  At least in the beginning, the DRI was closest to an approach
used at HP.

There are a lot of ways to crack this particular nut.  In addition to
hardware and heritage, the amount of interference the kernel people are
willing to endure also affects the choice.
