And I cannot > do Windows at all. OK I think that I have pierced the mystery: I believe that for some reason VMware may be buffering Ctrl-Alt-Del and passing it to X when it quits. In fact X isn't crashing but just quitting. This looks like a VMware keyboard buffer issue.
