I have the same notebook with P3 650MHz and 576MB RAM (since half a year, 
before i had 256 MB) Kernel from 2.4.4 to 2.4.18, KDE from 2.0.0 to 
3.0.2, XFree86 from 4.0.0 to 4.2.0. Emacs 20 and 21

Thats the error in the 4.1.0 xfree86, but the option should fix this.

Are you sure, that you have changed the right XF86Config? Please make a 
grep on your xfree log file for the Xaa.. parameter.

My machine was very stable with SuSE and Debian, not depending on the 
RAM.
