I'm running XFree86 4.2.0 on a Dell Latitude LM with a NeoMagic 2070 card,
896K video ram, SuSE 7.3. The archives were quite helpful in getting it
configured so that the display is correct, however I'm having one other
problem for which no solution seems to have been mentioned. X leaves the
console in an unusable state when it exits. It isn't even necessary to
fully start X to make this happen; "X -probeonly" will do it. "vga_reset"
restores the console, e.g. "xinit ; vga_reset". This is a less than
perfect solution, however; in order to successfully suspend I have to
switch to a text console, run vga_reset, and then suspend. I can then
return to console 7 when it wakes up and pick up where I left off. If I
suspend (or BIOS suspends) without doing this, it hangs. Also, it
sometimes hangs if I try to switch to an external monitor. Has anyone made
any progress on figuring out what part of the probe is screwing it up?

subscription went through yet.
