I don't know how much this would help but I have a neomagic on my Dell 
Latitude XPI P133ST and I'm running XF 4 on it on Debian, and it works 
semi-fine until you put Option "ShadowFB" on the Device section. On 
mine, what happened was that the display was screwed up but X still 
started. There was a band down vertically that I have absolutely no 
mouse access and completely screwed up graphics. Having ShadowFB just 
removed it.
Also did you configure and install X correctly? If you didn't X will 
likely just call it quits.
