stupid quesiton

ok this is a complete newbie question but whenever i run "startx", i have to 
press ctrl+alt+"+" twice to get to the correct screen setup where everything 
is the right size and fits correctly.  is there a way where i can make it 
startup correctly to avoid doing that?
